Friends at Work
We do a workaday dance
Back and forth through the store
He pushing a load of boxes one way
Me carrying garbage or whatever the other
Appearing and disappearing in the aisles
We exchange glances and glares and blank stares
while wearing our not too forced pleasant faces
customer service you know
"Barrios" he called me
"Barrios" as we passed
again and again "Barrios"
finally I told him "It's Barrientos"
"Barrientos" he calls me.
I couldn't reply
I didn't know his last name
I look it up
"Ortiz" I call him.
Last night we're doing our dance.
It's after closing.
I'm so not ready to
wash coffee pots again.
"How are you doing?" he says
"It's late" I say
dropping the pleasant face
"Just the way I like you" he says
